African Literature: An Anthology of Criticism and Theory
Edited by Tejumola Olaniyan & Ato Quayson (Wiley-Blackwell, 2007)
This landmark anthology brings together the foundational texts of African literary theory and criticism—gathering works that have long been scattered, obscure, or difficult to access. Spanning all genres and critical schools, the collection offers a comprehensive survey of Africa’s literary traditions, ranging from oral and postcolonial theory to feminist, Marxist, and postmodern perspectives. It provides readers with the rich intellectual context necessary to understand and interpret African literature, while also offering a springboard for further exploration and development within the field. As the first of its kind, this anthology not only preserves invaluable scholarship but also charts the terrain for future contributions to African literary criticism.
Why This Anthology Matters:
Accessible Core Texts: Many of the writings included were previously only available in scattered journals or hard-to-find publications.
Cross-Genre & Cross-Theory Coverage: Includes diverse critical approaches—feminist, postcolonial, Marxist, modernist, and beyond.
Historical and Theoretical Context: Offers a structured path through the development of African literary criticism.
Foundational Reference Work: A go-to resource for scholars, students, and anyone interested in African literary studies.
